One bicyclist was killed and another was seriously injured Tuesday night when the driver of a sport-utility vehicle veered off eastbound state Route 56 in Rancho Peñasquitos and into a bike path.

A new northbound Pacific Surfliner express train between San Diego and Los Angeles began service today and is expected to cut travel time as much as 20 minutes, by Amtrak.
    The express Surfliner (#563) leaves Santa Fe Station in Downtown San
Diego at 7:05 a.m. and stops in Solana Beach, Oceanside, Irvine, and
Anaheim before Los Angeles. Tickets are $31 one-way and trip time is
listed as 2 hours 28 minutes, by Amtrak

Twenty-three people were injured early Saturday, six critically, when a taxi driver veered off a busy San Diego street onto a sidewalk and plowed into patrons leaving a popular Gaslamp District nightclub just as it was closing, prompting the angry crowd to beat the driver and his cab.
    The taxi came to rest on the sidewalk at an angle to the front doors of
the Stingaree club on the corner of Sixth and Island avenues, pinning
one woman against a lower outside wall.

This seems like a golden ticket: a $200,000+/year *pension*.
    Educators pay 8 percent of their salaries toward their retirement, with
taxpayers contributing 8.25 percent from school districts and another 2
percent from the state. Those contributions would need to rise to fill
the $40.5 billion funding gap projected over the next 34 years.

For many travelers, the newest addition to San Diego International Airport has been about closed parking lots, rerouted roadways and the tearing down of bits and pieces of Terminal 2.
    New terminal gates for United means there will be room for more Southwest planes in the old terminal. Too bad we only have one runway though….

The new year will bring new laws, from requiring whooping cough shots to restricting sales of handgun ammunition. The most well-known legislation, from a San Diego County perspective, is the tightening of sex-offender laws in response to the murders of Chelsea King, 17, of Poway and Amber Dubois,
    More than 725 new laws go into effect tomorrow night like carpool lanes will open to plug-in electric vehicles and close to hybrids such as the Prius (AB 1500 and SB 535) and gift shops at hotels without full-service bars can sell sealed alcoholic beverages. SB 1260.

Under the basing plan, the Marine Corps will begin swapping out the San Diego installation’s F/A-18 Hornets in 2017, eventually replacing all 126 of the attack jets with about 96 Joint Strike Fighters.

When it comes to noise and traffic concerns, the impact of the decrease in jets, however, will be…

California would crack down on illegal school fees charged to students for everything from cheerleader uniforms and athletic gear to textbooks and art supplies under a landmark lawsuit settlement announced Thursday.
    The state Constitution requires a free education be available to
children. A 1984 Supreme Court ruling determined that extracurricular
activities are an extension of that promise. Even so, fees are routinely
charged for sports, band, lockers and supplies at schools up and down
California.

Since then, the population has boomed, thanks to a lack of many predators and an abundance of food sources. The birds eat falle…
    For those looking to bag a Thanksgiving dinner centerpiece, hunting season for wild turkey opened Nov. 13 and runs through Nov. 28. Hunting spots in the county include Cleveland National Forest, federal Bureau of Land Management territory and some state Department of Fish and Game lands.
In addition to having a hunting license, turkey hunters are required to buy an upland bird game stamp.
